New Perspectives Through The World of Magritte

What do other humans offer us? What can we learn from others? From paintings, books, poems?

A way of seeing. A vision radically different to ours, or one which echoes something of our own sensibilities inside.

I’ve always loved the masterly paintings of René Magritte. His paintings challenge our preconceived notions of what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, what ‘should’ be. He plays with contrasts such as light and dark.

He sees the potential in things, what things could be with a little imagination. He also points out the blatantly obvious. He uses paint to create visual plays, visual metaphors and narratives. Every painting becomes a story.

How trees are just one massive leaf. I love the playfulness. The animism of his work. He turns things inside out, on their head. That depending on your perspective you can see or interpret things differently.

If you are ever in Brussels, go to the Magritte Museum. It won’t disappoint. Full of paintings not found on the internet, it is a treasure trove of gems, symbols.

Magritte Museum is located Place Royale 1, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium.

More than ever we need to keep lifting the veil and searching for new ways of seeing. To become children again, playful, elegant and light. Jovial. Serene. Even for a few moments, a few hours, a few days if we are lucky.

Otherwise I fear we become too serious, too stubborn, too stuck in our ways, in our one dimensional modes on repetition, with not a shred of doubt, with not an opening to let the light in.

Magritte reminds us that ‘man’ is just a fiction.

His paintings allow for dreaming. For me his paintings are a sign of hope.

Let the caged bird free.
